Rome's elegant neighborhood. Wide boulevards, excellent food, and steps from the Vatican.
North of Vatican. Metro: Ottaviano-San Pietro (Line A)
Vatican visitors, families, authentic Roman life, shoppers
€€-€€€ - Better value than Centro Storico
Prati is what happens when Romans build a neighborhood for themselves, not tourists. Developed in the late 1800s after Rome became Italy's capital, Prati was designed with wide boulevards, elegant apartment buildings, and a grid street plan - revolutionary for Rome.
Walk along Via Cola di Rienzo and you'll see what Roman daily life actually looks like: families grocery shopping, elderly men debating at café tables, well-dressed professionals rushing to work. The stores sell products for Romans, not souvenirs. The restaurants have menus in Italian only. This is the authentic Rome that exists beyond the tourist circuit.
Yes, Prati is next to the Vatican - literally a 5-minute walk to St. Peter's Basilica. But step into the neighborhood and tourism fades away. You'll find excellent restaurants at half the price of Centro Storico, comfortable hotels without the markup, and shopping streets where locals actually shop.
The vibe is middle-class, residential, and decidedly unflashy. Think less Instagram, more real life. If you want to experience how Romans actually live while still being walking distance to major sights, Prati is your neighborhood.

Absolutely. You're 5 minutes from the Vatican, 15 minutes from Centro Storico, with excellent metro connections. Hotels are 30-40% cheaper than Centro Storico for similar quality, and you'll eat at better restaurants for less money. The neighborhood is safe, quiet at night, and authentically Roman.
Most hotels in Prati are 5-10 minutes walking from the Vatican Museums entrance. From Ottaviano metro station, it's about 7 minutes. This is THE neighborhood to stay if Vatican is your priority - you can literally walk there before the crowds arrive.
Very safe. Prati is a residential middle-class neighborhood. Streets are well-lit, locals are out and about, and it's much quieter than Centro Storico. Women can walk alone at night without concern. Main issue is finding restaurants open late - Romans eat early here.
Via Cola di Rienzo has excellent shopping but it's where Romans shop for themselves - think Zara, nice Italian brands, bookstores, food shops. Not luxury designer boutiques like Via Condotti. Better prices, more practical items, less touristy. Castroni gourmet food shop is a must-visit.
It's about 45 minutes walking. Doable but long. Better to take Metro Line A from Ottaviano to Termini, then switch to Line B to Colosseo (total 25 minutes). Or take bus 64. Save your walking energy for exploring neighborhoods.
Excellent restaurants at much better prices than tourist areas. Prati residents demand quality and won't tolerate tourist traps. Dal Toscano, L'Arcangelo, and Il Sorpasso are all top-tier. Pizzarium Bonci is legendary. Plus dozens of neighborhood trattorias that barely acknowledge tourists exist.
Calm and residential. A few wine bars and cafés, but this isn't a nightlife neighborhood. Romans who live here have families and jobs. For nightlife, head to Trastevere (15 min by taxi) or Monti. Prati is perfect if you want quiet evenings after long sightseeing days.
Different, not boring. You won't have baroque fountains on every corner, but you'll see how Romans actually live. Morning markets, local shops, neighborhood cafés, real-life Rome. If you want 24/7 tourist energy, stay in Centro Storico. If you want authentic Roman life + easy access to sights, Prati is perfect.
Yes. Buy CIS tickets (weekly pass, €24) at Ottaviano metro station or tobacco shops (tabacchi) throughout the neighborhood. Single tickets (€1.50) are also available. Weekly pass pays off if you take more than 16 trips.
Castel Sant'Angelo (incredible and less crowded than Vatican). Morning coffee at a bar on Via Cola di Rienzo. Pizza at Pizzarium Bonci. Mercato Trionfale market (Tuesday/Friday mornings). Sunset walk along Ponte Sant'Angelo. Dinner at Dal Toscano. And obviously, early morning Vatican Museums before crowds arrive.
Our guides live in Prati and know every hidden corner. Skip the tourist traps and discover authentic Rome, minutes from the Vatican.
